Community Aged Care: stories from the frontline

In homes across Brisbane, meals are being prepared, medications managed, and conversations shared. This is the world of community aged care. It’s a role that is often invisible to the public eye, yet it plays an essential part in supporting older Australians to remain living independently and with dignity.
At Wesley Mission Queensland (WMQ), we know how important community aged care workers are. We sat down with three long-serving staff members, Tina, Jennifer, and Meng to explore the realities of working in community aged care, the challenges and rewards, and what keeps them motivated after decades in the field.
More than just care
Community aged care work is not a one-size-fits-all job. No two days are ever the same. One day might involve helping a client with personal care and household tasks; another might be navigating complex health needs or coordinating services.
“I think people assume we just sit behind a desk,” says Tina, a Care Team Leader with 25 years of experience.
Our roles are broad. We’re part counsellor, part problem solver, part advocate. Sometimes people treat us like personal assistants, asking us to make decisions for their loved ones. But ultimately, our job is to support and empower, not take over.
Jennifer, a personal carer and former enrolled nurse of 35 years, agrees: “You do a bit of everything! Showering, shopping, companionship. I’ve probably cleaned every house in Brisbane,” she laughs.
But what I see a lot is people just needing a chat. Sometimes I’m the only person they’ll see that day.
For Meng, a carer coming up on 21 years of service, every day presents a new learning curve. “You’re always learning,” she says. “You work with people with dementia, mobility issues, mental health challenges. You have to find different ways to meet their needs safely.”
The realities of community aged care
The aged care worker role isn’t without its hurdles. Emotional labour, family expectations, and navigating shifting regulations are part of the job. Despite the demanding nature of the job, what keeps these workers going is simple: making a difference.
Jennifer reflects on the deeper lessons the job has taught her: “This work teaches you to live life to the fullest. I can see a real difference between clients who have lived full, happy, loved lives than those who have regret … I talk to clients who have travelled and seen the world and done so much. They’re happier in their old age. You have to live life big!”
Changing times in aged care
Over the past two decades, community aged care has evolved. There are new care models, more client choice, and increasing administrative responsibilities. But some things stay the same.
“We’re still cleaning, cooking, and caring,” says Jennifer. Tina adds, “It’s always changing, but that’s aged care! You have to stay flexible.”
Advice for future carers
All three agree: this job isn’t for everyone. But for the right person, it’s incredibly rewarding.
“You can’t be squeamish,” laughs Jennifer. “And you need to be friendly. Your energy impacts your clients.”
“Empathy is crucial,” adds Tina.
Be honest with yourself. If you’re not in it to genuinely care, this job will wear you down … And have a thick skin!
Meng sums it up best: “You need patience, responsibility, and a willingness to keep learning. That’s what makes a good carer.”
A career with heart and purpose
Community aged care is more than a job, it’s a commitment to compassion, dignity, and service. For those who thrive in meaningful, people-centred work, it offers flexibility, variety, and the chance to truly change lives. As Tina reflects, “I think I’ll be doing this until I retire. I’ve tried other jobs, but I keep coming back. It’s where I belong.”
