New specialist disability accommodation development on Sunshine Coast
A new residential development offering specialist disability accommodation has opened on the Sunshine Coast at Maroochydore.
The building, WesleyCare Maroochydore, which officially opens today (Thursday November 5) will support nine people under the age of 65 living with a disability to live a more independent lifestyle.
Wesley Mission Queensland CEO Geoff Batkin said the $5.1 million project delivered four stand-alone apartments and a share house with five rooms and communal living and recreational spaces.
“This development will allow all residents much more independence and a better quality of life,” Mr Batkin said.
“All of the residents will be able to access 24/7 clinical care and support when and how they would like which will also help to foster independence and choice.”
All of rooms and apartments have been allocated in the project for which was partially funded with a $1 million grant from the State Government.
“This model of care across all Wesley Mission Specialist Disability Accommodation services person-centred and promotes independence, dignity, choice and community connections,” Mr Batkin said.
“Wesley Mission Queensland is a recognised leader in Queensland in the provision of specialist disability accommodation.”
The Maroochydore building is Wesley Mission Queensland’s eighth SDA community in South East Queensland.
It also has extensive development plans to continue to provide support to this very vulnerable client group over the next five years.
“There is dire need of this type of specialist housing in Queensland,” Mr Batkin said.
“There are currently 5,905 people under the age of 65 living in aged care in Australia. Of those, 188 are under the age of 45.”
