Margaret's Story: it’s never too late to start home care
Image: Sarah, home care coordinator in Hervey Bay, is the reason we can share this story. Margaret (name changed for privacy) likes to keep her life low-key, but she really wanted to shine a light on Sarah's amazing support.
At 93, Margaret (name changed for privacy) is living proof that it's never too late to embrace the benefits of home care. Three years ago, following a recommendation from her brother, Margaret took her first step into specialised support at home services she wishes she’d known about sooner.
My brother told me about home care services, but it was my daughter who did all the research and found Wesley Mission Queensland (WMQ). She looked into everything, and WMQ stood out.
Adjusting to changing needs
Margaret’s journey with WMQ Home Care in Hervey Bay began with simple support services – cleaning and grocery shopping once a week. However, her recent stay in hospital due to complications with her diabetes has brought about new needs, and WMQ has been quick to adjust.
Sarah, the Care Team Leader in Hervey Bay, shares that Margaret now receives additional tailored support each morning, including help with breakfast, meal preparation, a walk around the block, and assistance in getting ready for the day ahead.
I was discharged two days ago, and they’ve already arranged for daily help in the mornings. Either Georgie or Sarah comes by for 30 minutes to assist me.
This flexibility and responsiveness to changing needs is one of WMQ’s key strengths, particularly for those hesitant to seek home care services. Margaret speaks highly of Sarah, her home care coordinator, and Georgie, who provides her daily support.
Sarah is absolutely marvellous. When she says something will be done, it happens.
Managing diabetes with home care services
To further support Margaret's health, WMQ also considered arranging a nutrition consultation with a nurse who specialises in diabetes management and education. However, her doctor advised that at Margaret's age, a strict dietary plan wouldn’t make a significant difference.
Instead, the focus remains on helping her maintain a healthy and balanced diet, reinforcing the flexibility WMQ offers to accommodate each individual’s unique circumstances.
The impact of home care on daily life
Margaret’s story is a testament to how home care services can transform daily life for seniors. Home care has given Margaret peace of mind as she continues living independently.
I live alone and I’m not a person who needs company. But I am appreciative of the fact they make sure everything is all right.
Her advice for anyone considering home care is to take that first step – carefully.
I’d tell them to investigate carefully who they’re looking at, but I couldn’t recommend WMQ more intensely. The care under Sarah’s coordination is excellent.
Margaret sums it up simply:
I certainly wish I had started earlier.
