Monika Batowska, trainee in WMQ’ Community Aged Care Career Pathways Program Portrait

We’re excited to share that Wesley Mission Queensland (WMQ) has been recognised in 2 categories at this year’s Queensland Training Awards. This honours not only the hard work of our VET team, but also the inspiring journey of one of our community aged care trainees, Monika Batowska.

Trainee of the Year nomination

It’s never too late to begin again

Monika (pictured), a trainee in WMQ’s Community Aged Care Career Pathways Program, is a regional finalist in the Bob Marshman Trainee of the Year category, putting her in the top 3 nominations statewide.

Monika’s nomination drew on her resilience in returning to study aged 40, showing others that it is never too late to pursue your career goals. It also showcased her passion for the industry and a role that allows her to have an impact on others.

Community Training Initiative nomination

WMQ has also been named in the top 3 nominations in the Community Training Initiative category for the second year running.

WMQ’s Schools-based Traineeship Program and Community Aged Care Traineeship Program were nominated as innovative projects responding to workforce shortages, helping to ensure a future pipeline of health and care workers.

Helping tackle the 100,000+ aged care worker shortage

WMQ is committed to developing the aged care workforce, introducing traineeship programs to address workforce shortages and ensure appropriate staffing levels into the future.

It has been projected that a shortfall of at least 110,000 direct care workers will occur over the next decade, potentially rising to more than 400,000 by 2050 if left unaddressed.

About the award

The Queensland Training Awards recognise individuals and organisations that strive for and have achieved success, best practice and innovation in vocational education and training (VET). The prestigious awards have been shining a spotlight on excellence in training since 1962.

The winners will be announced in July.
