Finding comfort in home care: Keith and Lei's story
We are so glad we have you, Sally. For many people in our situation, it's comforting to know that you are there.
– Keith Heale about Sally, his Home Care coordinator in the Sunshine Coast.
For Keith, 81, and Lei, 71, the past year has been a testament to the huge impact even basic home care services can have in seniors' everyday life. The couple faced health challenges and surgeries before seeking home care services from Wesley Mission Queensland (WMQ).
In a phone call, Keith shared their story and how they felt supported and confident in:
- Sally, their home care coordinator;
- Harry, the cleaner they see every two weeks;
- And all the drivers Lei spends time with, going to hydrotherapy appointments, community choir and, by the time this article is published, social outings.
The couple engaged our home care services last year, and, in Keith’s own words, ‘it has been absolutely amazing. They always go the extra mile.’
Keith had cataracts removed last year, and Lei needed a knee replacement and pacemaker surgeries, which made everyday living a challenge.
Their home care journey started with regular cleaning services. From cleaning showers to mopping floors, Harry's meticulous attention to detail and dedication shone through:
Having Harry takes a huge load off us, a huge pressure. We're very happy, very happy to have him.
From hydrotherapy sessions to community outings
In her first home visit, Sally presented Lei and Keith with all home care services suitable for their needs. Through goal setting and personalized assistance, Sally helped the couple navigate their path to recovery and a social life.
To support Lei's recovery, a WMQ driver picks her up from home and waits for her during the physio and hydrotherapy sessions. On every second Wednesday, the driver takes Lei to a community choir. They also drive the couple to Mooloolaba for a walk along the beach. Read about our transport services.
Every driver we’d had has been amazing. They've all been such nice caring, kind people and easy to talk to.
Throughout it all, Sally's caring nature and efficiency stood out. Her dedication to their well-being left a lasting impression, and they couldn't be more grateful for her presence in their lives.
When Sally went on holiday, I don't think she realized how much we missed her, even if other people are doing the services. When she's here, we have a feeling of support and safety. She tries to come here once a month, but I sent her a message yesterday and she rang me straight away.
Reflecting on Sally's relentless encouragement, Keith laughed: "She [Sally] has been getting on my case that I need to get out and get back into my art."
Keith and Lei's story is a testament to the compassionate care and unwavering support Wesley Mission Queensland's home care team provides. With our team by their side, Keith and Lei feel empowered to face whatever life throws their way.
Keith was kind enough to write an article for our website. Read here the unedited piece.
