Beyond tokenism: how embracing inclusivity and effective action plans drive real change
Diversity and inclusion are more prevalent than ever, being used as mantras in everything from advertising to job descriptions. While many organisations strive to embrace these values, their efforts often fall short of meaningful change. Superficial actions can hinder true inclusivity and lead to disillusionment among customers, employees, and stakeholders.
Inclusivity is not just a buzzword at Wesley Mission Queensland (WMQ), it’s at the heart of everything we do. We foster an environment where everyone feels welcomed, supported, and valued and our services are designed to be accessible and responsive to the diverse needs of our community.
WMQ’s Manager of Reconciliation, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, Eddie Solien, says:
As someone who identifies as a disabled, LGBTIQA+, Torres Strait Islander person, I deeply understand the complexities and challenges of intersectionality. My lived experience informs my approach to this role, ensuring that our initiatives are grounded in authenticity and empathy. For me, and for WMQ, this work is personal. It’s about more than just policies; it’s about creating a space where everyone’s story is honoured.
WMQ’s Manager of Reconciliation, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, Eddie Solien
Inclusivity boosts team dynamics, collaboration, and performance, making it vital for a successful and sustainable organisation. Its importance extends beyond ethics; in our diverse world, embracing inclusivity is key to a more equitable and prosperous future.
Diverse teams offer a variety of perspectives and ideas, leading to innovative solutions and challenging conventional thinking. As Eddie proudly states ‘our diversity is our strength—it drives innovation, fosters empathy, and creates a more just world.’
Embracing diversity at WMQ
WMQ actively participate in community events, including Brisbane Pride at Musgrave Park, Moreton Bay Pride Festival, and NAIDOC Week at Musgrave Park. Yarning circles, where First Nations employees can share stories and experiences are also hosted. These events are not just about visibility; they are about advocacy and standing in solidarity with our communities.
Through learning, cultural events, and idea-sharing, everyone helps create a workplace that values diversity and promotes reconciliation. Our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is not just a document but a commitment to change and partnership. As Eddie asserts:
We don't just talk about reconciliation; we live it every day through meaningful actions.
By embracing reconciliation principles and initiatives, businesses fulfill their social responsibilities while strengthening their organisations through meaningful connections and authentic engagement with First Nation peoples.
The WMQ Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Action Plan strengthens our commitment to create an environment of inclusivity and belonging where everyone can thrive. WMQ’s ally inclusion badge initiative encourages employees to champion inclusivity by completing DEIB training and wearing a WMQ pronoun badge to show their support of colleagues who identify as LGTQIBA+.
To date, 242 employees, representing 7.76% of our workforce, have voluntarily completed the training, showcasing a commendable commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment.
WMQ has also adapted recruitment processes to ensure they are mindful of different cultural preferences and behaviours, making candidates more comfortable when applying and interviewing for roles.
To drive real change, organisations must move beyond tokenism and adopt a holistic approach to inclusivity. Inclusivity is not a one-time achievement; it’s an ongoing journey that demands a deep, sustained commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive environment for all. As Eddie emplained:
Inclusivity isn't just about making room at the table; it's about ensuring every voice is heard, respected, and valued.
In short, embracing diversity and inclusion isn’t just the right thing to do - it's also a savvy business strategy that brings rewards on many levels and contributes to a more just and equitable society.
